How to Turn Trends into Growth: Insights from Managing 50 Stores

In business, navigating "trends" is an unavoidable challenge. The question is: will you let these constant shifts pass as a fleeting phase? Or will you transform them into a solid foundation for your organization’s growth?

Based on my experience managing 50 locations, I want to share my approach to turning market trends into lasting wisdom through simple judgment and the power of "recording."

Two Lenses to Spot What Truly Lasts

When a new "boom" arrives, I judge its long-term potential using two simple, objective perspectives:

  1. Are competitors starting to enter the market?
  2. Is the trend being embraced by "people of all ages and backgrounds"?

About 20 years ago, when a certain health drink became an explosive hit, I saw people from all walks of life reaching for it. It wasn't just a niche fad; it was becoming part of their daily routine.

When you see a trend permeating the lives of the general public and attracting competition, it is a sign that it will become a "staple" rather than just a passing phase.

Riding the Wave with Flexibility

While some prefer to stay away from trends, my fundamental approach is to "jump in first," as long as the risks are manageable.

Being there at the very beginning allows you to reap the full benefits. However, even if you feel slightly late, the lessons and profits you gain are still incredibly valuable.

Be flexible and take action—because the value of engaging with a trend goes far beyond just the sales numbers.

Sensing the "Temperature" of the Market

To stay ahead, I don't rely only on my own perspective. I value the diverse sensibilities of my frontline staff. An organization becomes stronger when everyone spreads their "antennae" wide.

Every day, I receive hundreds of updates from the field via various channels. I focus on the "temperature" and the subtle shifts within that flow of information.

By empowering our team—those who spot change early, those who inspire others, and those who execute brilliantly—we build a business that is naturally resilient to change.

"Records over Memories"

The greatest reward of successfully navigating a trend is the confidence it builds within the team. This becomes the energy for their next motivation.

However, humans often rewrite memories to suit themselves. That is why I always emphasize: "Records over Memories." I ask my teams to document the facts:

  • The Numbers: Sales volume, inventory, and speed.
  • The Visuals: Photos and descriptions of how products were displayed.
  • The "Whys": Personal insights and the real "feel" of the shop floor.

This accumulation of "records" is what remains long after a trend has passed. It becomes the reliable material that guides our next big decision.

Building a Foundation for the Future

Chasing trends isn't just about following what's new. It's about sensing a shift, taking action, and documenting the process. This cycle refines our judgment for whatever comes next.

By staying flexible and turning every lesson into a tangible record, we create a business that doesn't just survive change—it thrives because of it.
