The Wisdom Held in a Single Branch
The “Memory of Life” Carried by Its Time and Journey

The Moment of Encounter and the Story of a “Broken Branch”
Today, I picked up a fallen branch lying by the roadside. Had no one noticed it, it would have quietly returned to the earth. Yet ikebana has the power to transform even such a “broken branch” into a one‑of‑a‑kind expression of beauty.
A Form of Harmony Within the Work
In this arrangement, the dignified straight lines of the iris leaves and the gentle curves drawn by the weathered branch seem to enhance one another, creating a quiet sense of harmony. When two elements with different textures and directions breathe together within a single work, a profound beauty emerges.
What Becomes Visible in a Place with Limited Materials
In Japan, where we are blessed with seasonal flowers throughout the year, it is easy to take well‑formed beauty for granted. Here in Hawai‘i, however, where materials are limited, there are moments when the curve of a single branch or the strength of a bud preparing to open captures your heart.
Ikebana and the Eye That Discovers Beauty
It is not that “there are no materials,” but rather that we learn to cultivate an eye that discovers beauty. The wisdom of Japan that I hope to share through ikebana may, in fact, be quietly alive in the familiar nature that surrounds us.
